Dear PointPay Family,

It's time to recap the week! We've prepared a selection of the top 5 most important and interesting news stories from the week, so you can easily stay up to date with the key developments shaping the crypto space.

Bitcoin ETF inflows hit nearly $1 billion in a single day

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $998.95 million in net inflows on September 21 - their largest single-day result since October 2025. BlackRock's IBIT led the way with $381.4 million, followed by ARKB with $289.1 million and Fidelity's FBTC with $238.8 million. The Block's data is consistent with figures from Farside Investors.

Inflows continued on September 22, with Bitcoin ETFs receiving another $714.7 million. As a result, institutional demand became one of the most notable factors driving market movements this week.

ECB launches Pontes for tokenized finance

The Eurosystem has launched Pontes, a system that enables the settlement of wholesale transactions involving tokenized assets in central bank money. This marks the first stage of the ECB's strategy to adapt financial infrastructure to DLT-based markets.

The system has already moved into live operation: the ECB's records show that Pontes opened for settlement on September 21. Participants are being onboarded gradually, so for now, this is an infrastructure launch rather than a full transition of traditional markets to blockchain.

ECB plans to invest its own funds in tokenized securities

On the same day, the ECB announced plans to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities. The initiative concerns the central bank's own non-monetary portfolio, with the initial focus on euro-denominated securities issued by governments and supranational institutions.

This is notable because the central bank is taking on a potential role not only as an operator of settlement infrastructure, but also as an institutional investor in DLT-based assets. Settlements for these transactions are also planned to take place through Pontes.

Chainalysis: crypto economic activity barely changed despite the market downturn

According to a new Chainalysis study, global measured crypto economic activity declined by just 1.6% - from $9.5 trillion to $9.4 trillion - during the 12 months through June 30, 2026, despite an approximately 50% decline in total crypto market capitalization.

At the same time, the structure of activity changed significantly: domestic P2P transfers increased by 302.9% to $228.7 billion, while cross-border stablecoin flows rose by 77.5% to $220.3 billion. In other words, the decline in market valuations was significantly sharper than the decline in actual on-chain activity.

Canada's six largest banks explore tokenized deposits

Canada's six largest banks - BMO, CIBC, National Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD - have begun jointly exploring a Canadian-dollar tokenized deposit system. In its initial phase, the project is designed to enable the transfer of tokenized deposits between participating banks.

The stated goal is to enable faster, more programmable payments while preserving the traditional banking nature of deposits. The banks also indicated that other deposit-taking institutions could join the initiative at later stages.
