Circle launches public mainnet of Arc blockchain

Circle has opened the public mainnet of Arc, a standalone Layer 1 blockchain designed for financial markets, payments, and stablecoin use cases. USDC is used to pay for gas, while transaction finality is stated to take less than one second. At launch, the network connected more than 100 applications and institutional participants.

Arc's key feature is its attempt to build blockchain infrastructure directly around financial operations rather than around its own speculative token. One of its core features is interoperability with other networks through Circle's CCTP and Gateway.

Solana more than triples its maximum transaction size

On Solana's mainnet, Transaction V1 has been activated. The maximum size of a single transaction has increased from 1,232 to 4,096 bytes, or approximately 3.3 times. Older transaction formats continue to work as before.

The change is primarily designed to support more complex operations: large multisig transactions, zero-knowledge proofs, and certain confidential transfers can now fit into a single atomic transaction. This does not mean that Solana's TPS has automatically increased 3.3 times - the change affects the maximum amount of data that can be included in a single transaction.

Fed raises rates for the first time in more than three years - crypto market reacts sharply

The US Federal Reserve unanimously raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, to 3.75-4%. This marked the first Fed rate hike since 2023.

Following the decision, Bitcoin and Ether experienced sharp intraday volatility: according to The Block, BTC traded at approximately $75,000-$76,500, while ETH moved around $2,370-$2,430 immediately after the announcement. The interest rate itself is a macroeconomic factor, so this is not a crypto story in the narrow sense, but it directly affected digital asset markets during the period under review.

Ethereum and Base move away from a unified approach to account abstraction

Ethereum and Base developers have ended their attempt to combine two account abstraction proposals - EIP-8141 and EIP-8130. The teams will now continue developing their own approaches.

Both concepts aim to simplify the way users interact with wallets - for example, through passkeys, transaction batching, and the ability to pay gas without having to hold ETH. At the same time, Ethereum and Base are placing different priorities on security, censorship resistance, scalability, and practical compatibility.

Revolut suffers data breach, including Bitcoin transaction history

Revolut confirmed that an attacker gained access to the data of some customers after exploiting a fraudulent request sent from an address belonging to a legitimate government domain.

According to the company's notification, potentially exposed information could have included account statements, IBANs, withdrawal details, and complete transaction histories, including Bitcoin transactions. Revolut said the number of affected customers was limited and that those customers were contacted directly.

It's time to take a look at the week's biggest headlines, without the unnecessary noise or hype. We've put together a selection of five key stories that reflect the latest trends and major developments of the past few days.

Liquid Network loses around $320 million in the week's largest incident

On September 6, Bitcoin sidechain Liquid Network reported the withdrawal of approximately 4,000 BTC from its federated wallet, which held around 4,200 BTC. The network halted new transactions, while an investigation found that the underlying cryptographic key had not been directly compromised.

Later, the so-called white-hat attackers returned 3,400 BTC, leaving approximately 598 BTC unrecovered. According to SideSwap, the issue was related to a vulnerability in Elements used in the issuance of LBTC, rather than a compromise of the private key. The incident is particularly significant for the broader infrastructure supporting Bitcoin sidechains and bridges.

Ethereum prepares to enable fee payments without ETH

Ethereum developers have included EIP-8141 Frame Transactions in the roadmap for the planned Hegotá upgrade, which is expected in 2027. The technology will allow an application or another account to pay gas fees in ETH on behalf of the user.

This could remove one of Ethereum's biggest UX barriers: today, a user may hold USDT or another token but still be unable to send it without a small amount of ETH to cover the transaction fee. Frames also make it possible to bundle multiple related actions into a single transaction and open the door to new authorization models.

Solana plans to more than triple the maximum transaction size

Solana has announced plans to increase the limit from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes with the new Transaction v1 format. This will allow more complex operations to fit into a single transaction, including larger cryptographic proofs, multisignatures, and certain confidential transfers.

The change does not eliminate the existing transaction format, but it will require updates to services that parse Solana data. Larger transactions will also consume more network bandwidth and could potentially require higher priority fees during periods of congestion.

Circle agrees to acquire Tazapay for $400 million

Circle, the issuer of USDC, has agreed to acquire fintech company Tazapay for $400 million. Tazapay specializes in cross-border payments and could provide Circle with infrastructure for connecting stablecoins with local banking systems.

The deal highlights a broader trend: major stablecoin issuers are gradually moving beyond token issuance toward building full-scale payment infrastructure. For Circle, this is particularly important because the "last mile" between blockchain networks and local banking systems remains one of the key barriers to widespread stablecoin adoption.

Ethereum makes quantum resistance a major technical priority

Ethereum has identified December 2029 as a target for establishing quantum-resistant core infrastructure. The effort focuses on protecting the execution, consensus, and data layers against potential future quantum attacks.

At the same time, Bitcoin developers are working on BIP-360 and BIP-361, which propose a transition toward post-quantum signature schemes. The push to accelerate this research has also been fueled by a decision from the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide up to $100 million each to Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantinuum to develop larger fault-tolerant quantum computers. However, existing quantum computers do not currently pose a credible threat to Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Let's start with the listing of a new futures pair - AAPL/USDT! You can try it out right now on the PointPay exchange and trade futures with up to 100x leverage.

At the same time, your trading fees will continue to decrease as you trade more. That's how User Levels work, taking into account the amount of USDT in your account and your monthly futures trading volume. The higher these figures, the higher your level and the more attractive your benefits!

Next, we're continuing our work on adding new networks. Testing of the next batch of additions has been successfully completed, and they are now being added to PointPay - we'll share the full list along with the release.

We're also preparing a small update for our mobile apps. It includes UI improvements, minor fixes, and an upgrade to the latest versions of the technologies we use. It's not a major update, but it will make the app run more smoothly and reliably.

Standard Chartered launches spot BTC and ETH trading in the UAE

Standard Chartered has expanded its crypto offering in the UAE, giving institutional clients access to spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether with immediate settlement. Trades are available through the bank's existing electronic trading channels, while settlement can take place either through Standard Chartered or another custodian.

The move makes Standard Chartered the first global systemically important bank (G-SIB) to offer institutional spot crypto trading in the Gulf states. It also builds on the bank's previous expansion into the region, where it has already introduced crypto custody services.

OpenSea restores full Solana NFT trading

OpenSea has brought back full-fledged Solana NFT trading after stepping away from the market for several years. Users can once again buy, sell, and trade Solana-based collections directly through the OS2 platform.

The relaunch includes collections such as Mad Lads, Collector Crypt, Phygitals, and Claynosaurz. With Solana now back in the mix, OpenSea's multichain infrastructure continues to expand and currently supports more than 25 blockchains.

Strategy resumes Bitcoin purchases after a 10-week pause

Strategy is back in the Bitcoin market. The company acquired another 4,603 BTC for approximately $369.7 million, paying an average of $80,318 per coin. The purchase brought its total Bitcoin holdings to 845,050 BTC.

The acquisition marked Strategy's first major Bitcoin purchase following a roughly ten-week pause. The company funded the purchase in part through its ATM program while continuing to operate in the market for its preferred stock.

Bitmine pushes Ethereum reserves close to 5% of total ETH supply

Bitmine has further increased its Ethereum holdings, announcing the purchase of another 53,501 ETH. The latest acquisition brought the company's total reserves to 5,901,112 ETH, representing approximately 4.9% of Ethereum's total supply as of 30 August.

Bitmine also reported that more than 5 million ETH from its holdings are currently staked. With that, the company has moved even closer to its stated goal of controlling 5% of Ethereum's total supply.

Bitwise Solana ETF becomes the first Solana fund to surpass $1 billion

The Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) has crossed the $1 billion mark in assets under management, becoming the first US Solana ETF to reach the milestone.

The achievement is particularly notable given that BSOL reached the threshold roughly ten months after its launch. Unlike traditional spot products, the ETF combines direct exposure to SOL with staking, giving investors exposure to both the asset and its staking potential.

Solana votes to accelerate the reduction of SOL inflation

Solana has taken another step toward reducing the long-term issuance of SOL. The SGP-0002 / Double Disinflation proposal passed the network's first required onchain vote with 67.001% support, narrowly clearing the 66.67% threshold needed for approval.

The proposal would roughly double the pace at which SOL's issuance rate declines. If implemented, it would bring Solana significantly closer to its long-term target inflation rate of 1.5% and reduce cumulative issuance by approximately 18.9 million SOL compared with the previous schedule.

Shinhan and Visa team up to test stablecoin payments in South Korea

Shinhan Financial Group, one of South Korea's largest financial conglomerates, has partnered with Visa to explore stablecoin infrastructure and new AI-powered payment models. The collaboration will test key functions such as stablecoin issuance, transfers, and redemption while developing solutions tailored to the South Korean market.

The companies also plan to launch pilots involving stablecoin-powered card payments and expanded B2B and B2C settlement models. The partnership comes as South Korea advances a broader regulatory framework for digital assets, including stablecoins and crypto-related financial products, creating new opportunities for major financial institutions to expand their blockchain initiatives.

Bitcoin records its largest-ever weekly dollar gain

Bitcoin delivered its biggest weekly increase in dollar terms on record, climbing roughly $15,000 over seven days and closing the week above $77,700. The cryptocurrency gained 23.8%, as market sentiment shifted rapidly from caution to renewed optimism.

The rally was accompanied by strong institutional demand, with spot Bitcoin ETFs recording $1.9 billion in net inflows during the trading week ending August 21. Rising risk appetite also pushed the Crypto Fear and Greed Index to 78, its highest level since December 2024, bringing the market close to the "extreme greed" zone.

Revolut launches EURR in the European stablecoin market

Revolut has started rolling out EURR, its first euro-backed stablecoin, to selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal. The token is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the euro and is issued by Bridge under Europe's MiCA regulatory framework.

Initially launched on Ethereum, EURR allows eligible users to move between traditional euro balances and an onchain version of the currency within the Revolut app. The launch marks the first stage of a broader stablecoin strategy, with plans to expand to additional European markets and eventually introduce tokens linked to other currencies.

PointPay News 

This week's key headlines begin with the announcement of an AMA session featuring PointPay CEO Vladimir Kardapoltsev. Next week, on August 27, a new video will be released on our YouTube channel where Vladimir will recap the month of August, discuss current news, and share plans for September.

At the end of the video, you can look forward to an essential segment - answers to community questions! You can also submit your own questions using the special form. Send in one or more questions that interest you, and the most engaging, important, and compelling ones will be featured in the upcoming video.

This Thursday also marked the launch of our new activity - the Back to crypto school quiz! It will run until August 31, so you have plenty of time to participate. However, don't wait too long, as rewards may be awarded to the first participants who achieve the best results!

To take part, you must be a PointPay user and complete the quiz available at this link. There are 10 questions in total, with the difficulty increasing with each one - only true cryptocurrency experts will be able to get them all right.

Cryptosphere News 

The cryptosphere managed to take a deep breath and a sigh of relief this week. On average, there was a ~10% growth that occurred almost instantaneously. This was triggered by the US Treasury's announcement regarding the doubling of bond buybacks, which lowered bond yields and sparked renewed interest in risk assets like cryptocurrencies.

While this doesn't mark a new all-time high, it provides a significant upward momentum that could trigger a full-scale rally in the near future.

France faces growing threat from crypto-targeted home invasions

France is seeing a sharp rise in violent attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders, with criminals allegedly using leaked financial data to identify wealthy victims. Reports point to stolen government records containing crypto-related wealth information, while a separate breach at tax firm Waltio exposed tens of thousands of user records. Such data can give criminals not only a name, but also an address and an estimate of the potential payout.

The trend highlights a growing security challenge for self-custody. Digital protection can secure private keys from online attackers, but it cannot prevent physical coercion. With violent crypto robberies increasing in France, the case is raising difficult questions about how financial privacy, mandatory disclosures and personal security should be balanced.

Strategy sells another $109 million in Bitcoin

Strategy has sold another 1,690 BTC worth approximately $109 million, marking its second Bitcoin disposal this month. Instead of adding to its cryptocurrency reserves, the company plans to use the proceeds to repurchase one of its preferred-stock products.

The move continues a notable shift for a company historically known for aggressively accumulating Bitcoin. Strategy has now sold BTC four times since announcing plans in June to potentially liquidate up to $1.25 billion worth of its holdings to strengthen its cash position. The latest sale comes after a seven-week pause in Bitcoin purchases.

National Bank of Canada discloses exposure to XRP and Bitcoin ETFs

National Bank of Canada has reported holdings in several cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, including an XRP-focused ETF and multiple Bitcoin ETFs. The disclosure appeared in the institution's latest regulatory filing, highlighting growing exposure to digital assets among traditional financial institutions.

The move comes as crypto ETFs continue to expand their presence in mainstream investment portfolios. Institutional participation in products linked to Bitcoin and XRP suggests that regulated investment vehicles are becoming an increasingly important bridge between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency market.

Samsung plans stablecoin payments and cross-border transfers for Samsung Wallet

Samsung is preparing to introduce stablecoin accounts, cross-border transfers and in-store payments through Samsung Wallet later this year. The rollout will initially cover selected countries, with broader expansion dependent on local regulations and market conditions.

The move could bring stablecoin functionality to millions of users through an established mobile payment ecosystem. Samsung already supports crypto-related features on Galaxy devices, while its partnership with Coinbase gives some US users access to exchange balances through Samsung Wallet. The planned expansion would take those capabilities further by connecting stablecoins with everyday payments and international transfers.

Russia proposes limiting retail crypto trading to Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT

The Bank of Russia has proposed allowing only Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether's USDT to be traded by retail investors on licensed domestic exchanges. The draft rules reportedly rely on factors including market capitalization, trading activity and a trading history of at least five years, leaving most altcoins outside the proposed framework.

Retail investors would also face an annual investment limit of roughly $3,600 and would need to complete a risk assessment before trading. Qualified investors would not face the same cap. The proposal remains open for public feedback until August 24, with a potential rollout planned for September 1, meaning the framework has not yet been finalized.

This week, we're bringing you new additions to the networks and coins available on PointPay! Not long ago, we added more than 10 different networks, but that was a technical release. Now, we're starting to open access to these networks and list their native coins.

Here are the first new additions:

🔵 Arbitrum network and its native coin ARB/USDT

🟢 Celo chain and its native coin CELO/USDT

You can already deposit the respective coins, trade them, and withdraw your funds. We're continuing our work and will soon bring you even more new listings!

The Hot/Gainers section on the homepage also received some updates this week. We've improved the algorithms used to select coins and made several optimization adjustments. Check back every few days to discover new tokens and add them to your portfolio!

For the crypto market, this week passed relatively quietly. Most cryptocurrencies in the top 100 recorded modest price changes of 1-4%, with a slight tilt toward the red.

Rare physical Bitcoin coin fetches $91,500 at auction

A rare physical Bitcoin loaded with an unclaimed 1 BTC has been sold for $91,500 at a recent auction, highlighting the growing demand for early crypto collectibles. These coins contain a concealed private key beneath a security hologram, allowing the owner to redeem the Bitcoin. However, removing the seal permanently reduces the coin's collectible value.

With only 8,352 of these brass coins ever produced, they have become highly sought-after among collectors. The same auction also featured a physical coin holding 0.5 BTC, which sold for more than $34,000. Only 900 examples of that edition were created, making it another exceptionally scarce item.

Strategy cuts Bitcoin holdings with $105 million sale

Strategy has reduced its Bitcoin position after selling 1,638 BTC for approximately $105 million. Following the transaction, the company's total holdings now stand at 842,138 BTC.

According to the company, the proceeds were directed toward meeting financial obligations related to its preferred stock while also supporting the repurchase of STRC shares. The move reflects Strategy's ongoing effort to balance corporate financing with its long-term Bitcoin investment strategy.

Coldcard security incident triggers surge in small Bitcoin transfers

A suspected security breach involving Coldcard wallets has prompted Bitcoin holders to move funds at a pace not seen since the collapse of FTX. Nearly 39,600 BTC was transferred in transactions below 1 BTC, marking one of the largest spikes in small wallet activity in recent years.

Researchers say the attack is still unfolding, with estimated losses exceeding 1,300 BTC across thousands of affected addresses. The incident has reignited discussion across the crypto industry about self-custody, with some viewing it as proof of its resilience, while others argue that professionally managed custody solutions may offer stronger protection for everyday users.

Gold climbs as Bitcoin stalls despite strong stock market

Gold extended its rally to a six-week high as rising demand from Chinese investors continued to support prices. At the same time, US equities pushed to fresh record levels, with the S&P 500 maintaining its upward momentum.

Bitcoin, however, remained largely unchanged around the $64,000 level, failing to benefit from the broader strength across financial markets. Analysts suggest that stronger ETF inflows, easing bond yields, and a more supportive interest rate outlook may be needed before the cryptocurrency can regain sustained upward momentum.

Trump media moves $165 million In Bitcoin to crypto exchange

Addresses linked to Trump Media & Technology Group have transferred approximately 2,628 BTC, valued at around $165 million, to the cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com. While such transfers often raise speculation about a potential sale, the purpose of the transaction has not been confirmed.

The company is believed to have accumulated more than 11,500 BTC and continues to hold over 4,200 BTC after previous transfers earlier this year. Despite significant unrealized losses on its Bitcoin position, the latest movement alone does not provide clear evidence that the assets have been sold.
